COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cal’s Books Cooperative reopened on March 5 at 5242 Westside Rd after last year’s flood damaged many books and shelves. A group of young local owners raised over $15,000 with community support and plan to replace missing books while moving to a safer space in the future.  ShastaScout
  • Shasta Public Libraries received a $10,000 grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York and will use the funds for children’s garden projects. This is the first time Shasta County libraries have been awarded the grant ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.  KRCR

CRIME NEWS

  • The Shasta County District Attorney's office warned residents on Monday, Mar. 9 about a text scam that claims unpaid toll violations and threatens legal action (the scam mimics court notifications) while urging verification of any such messages.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Redding cannabis sales slipped during 2025 after a tax hike raised rates from 5% to 6%, generating $1.5 million in revenue compared to $2.1 million the year before, city finance officials said.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anderson Branch Library hosts free storytime events for kids every Thursday in March at 3200 W. Center St. There will be a Lego session on March 12, flower crafts on March 19, and a train-themed program with a toy giveaway on March 26 & more.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, following the clock change for daylight saving time, CAL FIRE reminds residents to test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to reduce fire risks (most devices use 9-volt or AA batteries or sealed 10-year batteries that should be replaced as needed).  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • K-shasta 104.3 and 957 The Wolf held a coast-to-coast radiothon last Thursday and Friday that raised $1,051,067 for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support free care for children. Donations will help provide travel, food, and housing for patients.  KQMS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Redding local sports action continues this week as Redding Christian boys and girls basketball teams compete for NorCal Division VI state titles on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 11 while baseball, softball, track, and volleyball contests add to the spring schedule.  Record Searchlight
