COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Redding can watch a total lunar eclipse today as the moon turns red, with the event beginning at 12:44 a.m., peaking at 3:33 a.m., and ending at 6:23 a.m. Clear skies are expected until clouds arrive (around 5 a.m.).  Record Searchlight
  • Mary Rickert was named 2026 Citizen of the Year at the Greater Redding Chamber of Commerce Legends and Leaders celebration held Friday, Feb. 27 at the Holiday Inn. The former Shasta County Supervisor made history by advocating so girls could compete in FFA competitions.  Record Searchlight

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cal’s Books Cooperative will reopen Thursday, March 5 at 5242 Westside Road from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The bookstore, which raised over $15,000 through a GoFundMe to aid in its recovery from last December’s flood, plans to move to a larger venue due to flood risk concerns.  Record Searchlight

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Gateway Science Museum drew record visitors during the free Butte County Museum Weekend, attracting families with interactive displays for children — the event ended yesterday.  Action News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Monday, the Mount Shasta Ski Resort suspended operations for the third time this year due to low snow, leaving visitors to rely on downtown attractions and outdoor spots as local hotels experience a slower start to the season + Visit Redding projects a 43% boost in short-term rentals for July and August.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Shasta-Trinity National Forest will burn 375 acres near Lakehead and 50 acres near Lewiston and Trinity Lake this week as weather allows; the affected areas may close to the public for a few days.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Forest Service is asking for public input on grant applications for the OHV Recreation Division Grant Program set to support patrols in the Six Rivers and Shasta Trinity National Forests. Comments are welcomed from today through May 4 and the final application will be submitted in June.  KRCR
  • The Turtle Bay to Downtown Gap Completion Project began on Monday, March 2 and runs from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. with detours on Sundial Bridge Drive and Auditorium Drive until crews finish the raised intersection, sidewalks, pedestrian facilities and pathway lighting by Saturday, April 11 to complete the shared-use trail gap.  KRCR
  • Emergency repairs on State Route 299 near Buckhorn Summit are set to begin after a February 24 slipout damaged a pullout and part of the eastbound shoulder (officials confirm the mainline remains safe and traffic control is in place).  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tribal leaders gave a tour on Monday, March 2 of the new Tribal Health Village being built (195,000 sqft) across Clear Creek from Win-River Casino and Event Center. The $222M campus will integrate a wellness and medical center offering both traditional and modern care and is set to open in March 2027.  KRCR

SPORTS NEWS

  • State playoff basketball games start today at 7 p.m. in Division IV and V for boys and girls, while matchups in NorCal Division VI will occur Wednesday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. featuring Redding Christian, + other local teams + rising talents.  Record Searchlight
  • Today, the Northern Section begins the 2026 CIF soccer playoffs as six boys teams and six girls teams compete on higher seed home fields; the Winters boys team is the only host, set to play its Division IV game at 5 p.m.  Record Searchlight
