  • Melissa Morris of Cypress Elementary was named Shasta County’s 2026 School Counselor of the Year by the Shasta County Office of Education today at 3:30 a.m. PT for her innovative, data-driven methods that include co-founding a Kindness Club and creating a Sensory Room.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Prescribed burns will begin today in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest to reduce wildfire risk; drivers along I-5 north of Redding and nearby areas should expect smoke and possible road closures. Officials will monitor weather through Feb. 13 to ensure safe burns — follow posted signs for updates.  Record Searchlight

  • Work is underway at the former Popeyes on Lake Boulevard as developers start repurposing the site; further project details are expected soon.  Record Searchlight

SPORTS NEWS

  • Chico High’s boys and girls wrestling teams won the Eastern Athletic League championships on Feb. 7 at Shasta High School. The boys scored 187.5 and the girls earned 177 points, marking six individual first-place finishes for Chico.  Record Searchlight
