COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Girl Scouts of Northern California visited Daybreak Thursday morning to showcase their new cookie and explain how sales fund programs and local camps — giving girls a chance to learn business skills and teamwork. Over 14,000 scouts in the region are set to participate this season.  KRCR
  • The Flight Deck Grill in Redding will host a fundraiser at Benton Airpark on Saturday, Feb. 7 and Sunday, Feb. 8 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to aid families affected by a Highway 299 crash. Raffles and auctions will donate half the proceeds; owners urge guests to bring cash.  KRCR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DeVINE, a new restaurant in Redding, held a soft opening on Thursday by offering first responders free meals to thank them— it will open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the former View 202 location.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • After more than two years of closure due to flooding, the Shasta Historical Society is returning with a museum-style focus. The free event is today from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1449 Market St — it features a historic photo exhibit by Tom Houghton.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife officials in the Northstate recently fitted tracking collars on five gray wolves, capturing them by helicopter between Jan. 12 and Jan. 20. Veterinary teams examined the animals + collected samples before releasing them near their capture sites, while the death of one wolf is under investigation.  KRCR
  • Caltrans officials in District 2 say highway cleanup teams use a contractor to remove human waste from Interstate 5, costing about $3,000 per month (in the most recent session crews removed nine 55-gallon barrels). Officials urge motorists to stop littering to protect waterways, wildlife and human health.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding and the SBA will host a Disaster Loan Outreach Center at City Hall to help residents and businesses apply for low-interest disaster loans. The center opens tomorrow at 12 p.m. (777 Cypress Avenue) and will be available for several weeks.  ShastaScout

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 4, the Record Searchlight released a commitment hub listing local high school athletes who signed with colleges to continue their sports careers. The hub covers players in football, volleyball, softball and wrestling from various Redding-area schools.  Record Searchlight
