COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials announced a temporary funding boost on Tuesday, Feb. 3 to keep the historic Civic Auditorium in downtown Redding operating as a community hub while additional support is pursued.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Mike Freeman announced his bid to keep his seat as head of the Shasta County Office of Education ahead of the June primary. Appointed in 2024 (replacing Judy Flores), he is the only candidate to file and his campaign focuses on school safety and improving reading and math scores.  ShastaScout
  • Nineteen students were celebrated at the Shasta County Office of Education's 9th annual Every Student Succeeding luncheon in Redding. They overcame hardships such as poverty and homelessness and received keepsake awards and sweatshirts from participating colleges — a nod to their resilience and support from teachers and families.  Action News Now
  • Children can attend free story time events at Anderson Library (3200 W. Center St.) starting tomorrow, Feb. 5, through Feb. 26, with themed activities on dental health, music, manners and wildlife held each Thursday.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Community members from Horsetown Clear Creek Preserve raised concerns over unpermitted grading by a nearby gun club+ they worry dirt runoff could harm Clear Creek. Shasta County has issued stop-work orders and said a permit is needed before work can continue.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding Electric Utility warns customers about scammers falsely claiming to partner with the utility to install solar today. The utility advises residents not to share personal or financial information and to verify offers by calling 530-339-7200.  Record Searchlight

HEALTH NEWS

  • State health officials confirmed nine measles cases statewide with exposure linked to Disneyland & LAX, including one reported in Redding. They urge residents to check their MMR vaccination records if they visited local sites on Jan. 23, 24, or 28.  Record Searchlight
  • Mercy Medical Center is lighting its facade red this February to promote heart health as local rates are 5.4% above average. Residents can join a free Walk With A Doc at Sundial Bridge on Saturday, Feb. 21.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Red Bluff and Central Valley high school wrestlers, Austin Curl and Gracelynn Morris, were honored as Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week (Jan. 26-Feb. 1) for their achievements on the mat. Curl has shown reliable attendance, and Morris balances extra training with regular practices.  Record Searchlight
