COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteer groups surveyed homeless residents across Redding on Jan. 26 — 27 to conduct the federal Point-in-Time census, which guides local funding. FaithWorks set up a station near Mercy Canyon off Linden Avenue where volunteers distributed meals and supplies.  Record Searchlight

  • El Pollo Loco is under construction on Redding’s west side at the site of the former Honeymoon’s Kitchen. Local residents look for fresh dining options as the project progresses.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Joseph Elementary School held a telethon during its Education Fair on Thursday, Jan. 29 that raised $43,000 from 350 donors; the fundraiser gave students practical experience in handling calls (Bill Koppes said the idea had been years in the making).  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Friends of the Eel River reported 1,324 Chinook salmon were seen today at Cape Horn Dam, marking the highest count since 2013 + the record underscores active fish populations in our area.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Advance Redding named board member Eric Hiatt as president after Bethel Church leaders Kris Valloton and Charlie Harper stepped down — Hiatt will propose new business plans and increased community engagement while working with a special committee led by Council Members Erin Resner and Tenessa Audette.  KQMS
  • City officials will begin work Monday on an $1.8M project to complete the Sacramento River Trail link along Sundial Bridge Drive from Butte Street to the Turtle Bay parking lot, with the upgrade due to finish by April 24 and 92% state-funded.  KQMS
  • On Friday, the Redding Electric Utility warned residents about a solar scam where callers falsely claimed a partnership with the utility. The agency urges residents to verify claims and choose licensed solar contractors — contact REU directly if something seems off.  Action News Now

  • A recent report shows that Redding’s median monthly rent has reached nearly $1,900 — with three-bedroom rentals averaging $2,375, based on data from HUD, BLS, and the Census Bureau.  KQMS

  • On Jan. 30, local fans cast over 200,000 votes to name midseason wrestlers of the year. West Valley's Austin Domke and U-Prep's Leah Schaden were selected — the teen athletes praised their hard work and team spirit as they prepare for upcoming regional meets.  Record Searchlight
