COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food banks in Shasta County are facing slower donations after the holiday rush as supplies turn over quickly; Dignity Health will host a food distribution this Saturday (Jan. 24) to help meet ongoing needs for food and hygiene items.  KRCR
  • One Safe Place on Benton Drive reopened Tuesday after a four‑month flood closure — local residents now have access to the facility’s services.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 26th annual Snow Goose Festival is running through Sunday and draws an estimated 700 bird watchers across the Northern Sacramento Valley. Guided walks at Hooker Oak Park and workshops let visitors explore over 150 bird species, and pre-registration is required for many events.  Action News Now
  • Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is inviting two artists to serve a spring residency by creating one public art piece for permanent display, and applications must be submitted by February 20. Selected artists will contribute lasting art to the park.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • National Park Service invites public comment on the plan to rebuild Whiskeytown Environmental School after the Carr Fire and flooding. The public comment period runs until Feb. 21, with a meeting set for Feb. 7 at Hatcher Hall (Whiskeytown campus) to discuss expanding programming and rebuilding facilities for sustainable education.  Action News Now
  • In October 2025, the Sundial Riffle Raffle, in partnership with Redding East Rotary, awarded $126K to 26 local schools and youth groups to support substance abuse prevention and youth development programs — Mistletoe School set a record with $26,245 in sales while new seller groups qualified for a matching grant.  Action News Now
  • First 5 Shasta held a free event on Thursday, Jan. 22 at Park Marina Circle to help professionals tackle workplace negativity; Program Coordinator Megan Johnson noted nearly double the usual turnout as participants learned skills in open communication and constructive feedback (key tools for effective management).  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Jan. 20 meeting, city officials said the Civic Auditorium needs an extra $1.4 to $1.6 million each year to stay open and the council is forgoing rent for six months while seeking gap funding ($116K monthly) and private donations to keep it running through February.   Record Searchlight

HEALTH NEWS

  • Vitalant is hosting a Winter Classic Blood Drive (10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 24) at Mt. Shasta Mall on Dana Drive. Donors making appointments from Jan. 5 to Feb. 8 may win a $500 Rewards gift card with code SMFT175.  Action News Now
  • Dignity Health partnered with Stanford’s cardiac program to boost treatment at Mercy Redding Heart Center — doctors Greentree and Vu explained that robotic surgery lets them fix hearts with small incisions, giving patients access to advanced care.  KRCR
  • Senator Adam Schiff unveiled a bipartisan deal to restore Glenn Medical Center’s critical access status after a federal policy change. Backed by legislation from Schiff and late Doug LaMalfa, the plan is set for House debate this week + Senate vote next week and could reopen the hospital in Willows.  Action News Now

  • Enterprise Sports Boosters will host the first annual Local Legends alumni basketball game this Saturday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at Manatowa Gym — featuring 19 former Shasta and Enterprise players competing to raise funds for EHS athletics.  Record Searchlight
  • Simpson University's bass fishing team is the only fully funded program of its kind west of Texas, offering athletic scholarships to local and international students & building skills for national tournaments. The team will compete in the BAM Pro-Am Bass Tournament at Lake Shasta, starting today at 7:30 a.m.  KRCR
