COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents united for Martin Luther King Day celebrations on Monday, Jan. 19 when they gathered at the courthouse for a prayer circle and singing and later marched to Sequoia Middle School for a performance by the Shasta Children’s Chorus and a community lunch.  Record Searchlight
  • United Way of Northern California's free tax help program for families faces a funding cut that will limit in-person appointments and redirect clients to Tri Counties Bank branches (or online filing). The nonprofit is working to secure a federal grant as state funds drop to under 25% of previous support.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Redding Anime Expo returns for its third year from Feb. 28 to Mar. 1 at the Red Lion Hotel (Hilltop), featuring voice actors from major series like SpongeBob, X-Men, and Dragon Ball Z while highlighting local native Brook Chalmers to inspire youth.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters in the Plumas National Forest are set to begin prescribed burns on 54 acres of piles in the Magalia area tomorrow at 10 a.m. weather permitting + the burns are aimed at reducing fuel hazards from the 2018 Camp Fire near Paradise Lake and Coutolenc Road.  KRCR
  • Cal Fire started a large prescribed burn Monday — burning manageable sections on 500 acres near Platina as part of the Williams Ranch Vegetation Management Project — and the controlled burn will continue daily through next week.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rumors that Redding Library will close are unfounded, as city officials confirmed it remains open with county support — the City Council will review the budget over the next three months and community members are invited to the A Novel Affair Gala on Feb. 21.  KRCR
  • The Shasta County Fire Safe Council is offering a free vegetation chipping program in Southwestern Shasta County — including Igo, Happy Valley and Anderson — this January to cut wood waste and lower wildfire risk. Residents can benefit from rotating free chipping days over the year.  KQMS
