COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shasta Beloved Community is hosting an MLK Day celebration on Monday, Jan. 19 at Sequoia Middle School starting at 10 a.m. with a prayer circle and march from the courthouse, and shuttle service begins at 9:20 a.m.—the event features performances and lunch and welcomes community members rain or shine.  ShastaScout
  • Cal's Books will reopen as a nonprofit after employees found enough flood-surviving books with owner Carl's blessing (community members will help restore the co-op). The plan aims to serve local readers and revive the historic store.  Action News Now
  • Redding Electric Utility is lending induction cooktops so active customers can try out a new cooking method at the customer service center on 3611 Avtech Parkway. The kit includes a cooktop, a compatible pot and a pamphlet, and can be borrowed for up to three weeks.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Board of Supervisors approved $888,683 in opioid litigation settlement funds for Shasta College to support its step-up and alcohol and drug studies programs that help recovering students through three-year courses.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Whiskeytown Lake reached full capacity with water just three inches from flowing over the spillway after recent winter storms. Water spilled into the glory hole last week+ flowed into Clear Creek, which feeds the Sacramento River.  KQMS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in unincorporated Shasta County now pay over $50 per month for waste services as new SB 1383 organic waste regulations take effect. The additional charge covers a weekly organic pickup—non-compliance may bring fines—and follows a mailed notice warning of these changes.  KRCR

  • Action News Now named Daisy as Pet of the Week on Thursday, Jan. 15 (celebrating her friendly charm) to spotlight a local pet that delights residents.  Action News Now

  • West Valley head football coach Jason Weston resigned Wednesday to pursue personal career goals and will continue teaching at West Valley as the search for a new coach begins. Weston led the Eagles to a league title in his first season and playoff runs in recent years.  Record Searchlight
