- ➤ Friends of Cal’s Books launched a GoFundMe over a week ago to raise $50,000 in hopes of reopening the cherished bookstore damaged by December floods off Westside Road. They plan to convert the shop into a community owned nonprofit cooperative while retaining the current owner as a consultant. Record Searchlight
- ➤ The Shasta Beloved Community with local partners is hosting a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Celebration Monday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sequoia Middle School in Redding, which will feature a prayer circle, march, bell ringing ceremony, and lunch provided by Asphalt Cowboys. - ➤ Shasta College received nearly $900,000 in opioid settlement funds to expand its STEP-UP and Alcohol and Drug Studies programs for recovering and formerly incarcerated students. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors approved the allocation (4-1 vote), and the college expects its first funding installment in spring. Record Searchlight
- ➤ Shasta Union High School District will mark its 100th anniversary next Saturday at University Preparatory School with a public 55-minute documentary screening at 1 PM—followed by a Q&A session; admission is free for Shasta Historical Society members with a suggested $10 donation. KQMS

- ➤ CAL FIRE will allocate over $12 million to fund wildfire prevention across Northern California. The grant supports 84 projects including the Backbone Ridge Fuel Break for Ingot, Oak Run, Round Mountain, & Bella Bista in Shasta County and efforts in Siskiyou, Butte, and Tehama Counties. KQMS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Caltrans District 2 set a new 55 mph speed limit on Highway 44 near the Silver Bridge Road intersection in Shasta County, effective Tuesday after new signs were installed on Monday. The change covers the stretch from (post miles 7.5 to 8.5) and follows a safety investigation that noted a higher crash rate. Action News Now
- ➤ County staff in an informal meeting yesterday debated changing the Mental Health Alcohol and Drug Advisory Board's schedule and presentation times to reduce costs.
