COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members gathered at Good News Rescue Mission's chapel on Jan. 8 to remember those who died while homeless. The service featured song and prayer (a collective effort to heal) that brought comfort to many in Redding.  Action News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After two feet of floodwater damaged Cal’s Books on Dec. 21, its owner closed the historic bookstore, but a group of 20-year-olds has launched a cooperative to revive it. They plan to clear damage, raise $50,000 and move the location closer to town once funding is secured.  ShastaScout

EDUCATION NEWS

  • SMART Workforce Center has launched the REALM Program to help non-English speakers access free job training and career support. The program offers guidance in trucking, construction, warehouse and manufacturing for adults with valid work documents.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Redding are urged by the Shasta County Fire Safe Council to use defensible space and home hardening methods to protect their homes from wildfires—these combined strategies could increase survival rates. A public education meeting will be held on Jan. 28 at 9 a.m. at KIXE.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • FEMA unveiled updated flood maps on Thursday for Tehama County and Red Bluff, showing revised flood hazards along seven streams. Residents and officials will have a 90 day appeal period from Jan. 22 to Apr. 22 to contest the information.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County Chemical People asked the City Council on Jan. 6 to work together in distributing over $2.1 million in opioid settlement funds; the group said the money should be used to expand programs & educate schools to help prevent youth substance abuse. City Council staff have not yet responded.  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planet Fitness in Redding saw a surge in memberships Jan. 8 as locals embraced fitness routines with their New Year's resolutions + occasional wait times for machines. The gym offers deals of one dollar down and $15 a month with a TV giveaway until Jan.9.  KRCR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mount Shasta native Sergeant Robert Burns (a U.S. Army soldier) is preparing for his second Winter Olympics appearance in snowboarding. He competed in 2022 and is aiming to qualify in upcoming events later this year.  Action News Now
