COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spectrum warned its Shasta County customers on Tuesday that outages may occur today as winter storms flood streets and cause road closures. The company advised residents to prepare by charging devices and using surge protectors.  Record Searchlight
  • The American Red Cross is now running an overnight shelter at Pilgrim Congregational Church (2850 Foothill Blvd) for those displaced by flooding. Volunteers offer warm meals, cots, and essential supplies, and pet help is available at Haven Humane Society with proof of residency.  KRCR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cal's Books, Redding’s long-loved used bookstore, closed permanently after a flood on Dec. 21 damaged its 3,000 sqft store with 2 feet of water — an event that ended its 35-year service despite nearly $10,000 raised by fans for repairs.  Record Searchlight

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local leaders including Vice Mayor Paul Dhanuka and Simpson University President Norm Hall are working on plans to establish a community-focused medical school to boost local health care, as the consortium prepares a feasibility study and strategic plan with site visits planned for next steps + details remain uncertain.  ShastaScout

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A flood watch covers California through Friday as atmospheric river storms bring heavy rain, strong winds and mountain snow to an 800-mile area (including Redding, where crews rescued residents over the weekend) and may lead to flash floods and travel delays.  Record Searchlight
  • Between Dec. 19 and Dec. 23, Redding experienced heavy rain that pushed totals above normal levels, with 7.24 inches at the Fire Station + 10.01 inches near Whiskeytown leading to localized flooding while the 1940 record remains unbroken.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shasta County residents are urged to prepare for heavy rains today by picking up free sandbags from designated spots such as local fire and sheriff’s stations. The sheriff’s office advises filling bags only two-thirds full and using gloves & goggles to avoid injury.  KRCR
  • Shasta County remains under a state of emergency following flash floods, and the Pilgrim Congregational Church emergency shelter on Foothill Boulevard stays open for two to three days with space for 50 people while Haven Humane cares for pets (not allowed inside the shelter).  Action News Now
  • Captain Boic retired after a 31-year career with CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit, starting in 1994 in Tehama-Glenn and later serving at Burney, Diddy Wells, Shingletown, and Ono — he now plans to focus on athletics and family while his mentorship continues to benefit colleagues.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Enterprise guard Julian Turner scored 19 points and grabbed rebounds along with steals in vital wins, while Shasta guard Riley Rosales, who battled injuries, posted a career-high 29 points. Both athletes are honored as the Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week for Dec. 15-21.  Record Searchlight
  • Mt. Shasta Ski Park plans to open its 2025-26 season on Saturday, Dec. 27 if up to 2 ft of snow falls. The park, celebrating 40 years, will host a New Year's Eve party with fireworks + discounted lift tickets.  Record Searchlight
