COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Redding Police cleared over 11,000 pounds of garbage from homeless camps on Lake Boulevard on Tuesday using Community Work Program Officers (CWPO) and a boom claw truck; additional teams tackled cleanup at encampments on nearby streets.  KRCR
  • Baileys Book Nook, a new locally owned bookstore in downtown Redding, opened its doors on Dec. 5 to create a welcoming hub for book lovers to exchange both new and gently used titles. Its owners expect the store to drive community connections — adding a cozy living room style atmosphere.  KRCR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Redding now hosts California's largest entertainment zone where 18 businesses let customers 21+ carry drinks outdoors from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; local leaders say the change supports business + boosts foot traffic and will be reviewed by city council in six months.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Congress reauthorized the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act with a House vote of 399 to 5, restoring retroactive funding for rural schools that received nearly $34 million in 2024; students from Fall River helped advocate in Washington (a move that supports essential school programs).  ShastaScout

  • On Tuesday, Dec. 16, Mari Carey-Bernier shared a photo showing two bald eagles perched high on a pine tree near Lime Saddle Marina. The image captured a quiet moment for local wildlife.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House passed a bill that would return 580 acres (Four Corners) between Burney and Fall River Mills to the Pit River Tribe, allowing them to build an interpretive center and expand cultural education as the Senate reviews the measure.  KRCR
  • On Dec. 16, 2025, Shasta County Supervisor Kevin Crye announced he was diagnosed with stage II colon cancer at the board meeting. He will continue working during treatment (urging others to get checked) and has requested privacy for future updates.  Record Searchlight
  • The CHP warns drivers that vehicles decorated with holiday lights risk citations if their lights are turned on while driving. Officers say only clear, amber and sometimes lime fog lights are allowed, so drivers should keep decorative lights off except when parked.  KRCR
  • The California Energy Commission will make a final decision on Fountain Wind at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19 in Sacramento. The staff’s assessment pointed to tribal heritage and wildfire mitigation impacts that could lead to a denial of Repsol’s request.  ShastaScout
  • The House passed the Pit River Land Transfer Act that will transfer 580 acres near Burney and Fall River Mills to the Pit River Tribe — the land will help build an interpretive center to educate locals on its 10,000-year history.  Action News Now
