COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Redding resident Stacy Prewitt chose to shop at Barone’s Christmas Trees after saying that cutting one in the forest was too cold and tiring - a tradition recommended by friends. The family-run lot and other local lots in Redding and Anderson offered a range of fir trees and festive extras during the busy season - providing families with varied options for their holiday celebrations.  Record Searchlight
  • Anderson will host its annual Christmas parade on Sunday evening on Center Street with the theme 'Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.' The event will start at 4 p.m. with food trucks and kids activities, the parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. — followed by a visit from Santa with free pictures and the opening of the Anderson ice rink.  KQMS

  • Redding Public Market opened its doors in downtown Redding after nearly seven years of planning — the new market is hailed as a transformative addition set to boost local business growth.  Action News Now
  • Fourteen grocery stores in Redding are open today for Thanksgiving shopping with reduced hours—while Costco, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart remain closed. Shoppers should call ahead to confirm specific hours to plan their last-minute dinner errands.  Record Searchlight

  • Local government, retailers, and the Shasta County Arts Council are hosting Artist Sunday, a pop-up makers market at Old City Hall Ballroom on Market and Shasta Streets—other venues including the Shasta Historical Society, Art Hunger Gallery, David Anderson Gallery, and North Valley Art League in Caldwell Park will offer unique art gifts with free downtown parking available on weekends.  KQMS
  • The Redding Garden of Lights — a civic pride project — has doubled its display to 2 million lights since its 2019 debut and is nominated among 20 botanical garden light displays in USA TODAY’s 10Best Holiday Lights Displays.   • University of California researchers have launched an interactive mapping tool (Carrying our Ancestors Home) that shows how Maidu and Pit River peoples have reclaimed their ancestral land through long-standing activism. The StoryMaps combine text, photos and videos to explain how Tribal communities overcame past displacement from hydroelectric dam projects and continue to protect their heritage.  ShastaScout

  • Choose Redding Lodging and UpState CA launched a 10-to-15-minute survey on November 26th to gather tourism insights from residents in eight northeastern counties for new local tourism policies—this comes as Laurie Baker steps down and new CEO Jennifer Johnston is set to take over in early December.  KRCR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shasta County's Health and Human Services Agency announced a breach of protected health information when a former employee accessed data for about 164 clients between March and September; the breach was discovered on September 30. The agency is investigating the incident — affected clients will receive a mailed notice within 7 to 10 days and are advised to monitor their credit.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County Health and Human Services Director Christy Coleman and Supervisor Chris Kelstrom reversed their earlier opposition and now support the True North Behavioral Health Campus project amidst concerns over fiscal risks. The $200M initiative (with $50M from Signature Healthcare Services) seeks $150M in state grants, is expected to create 200 new health-care jobs, and will be discussed at a Town Hall meeting on December 8th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Dignity Health Connected Living in Redding.  Action News Now
  • Multiple Shasta County leaders including HHSA Director Christy Coleman and Supervisor Chris Kelstrom have submitted over 50 letters supporting the True North Behavioral Health Campus project, which will move ahead despite a state grant rejection in late October—Arch Collaborative stated it will work with HHSA to ready the project before a town hall meeting on December 8 at Dignity Health Connected Living on 200 Mercy Oaks Dr in Redding.  KRCR
  • Shasta County Health and Human Services received a $110,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to buy child car seats and offer them free to families who need them — the funds will also support local car seat inspection, education events, and technician training to help reduce injuries from vehicle crashes.  KQMS

  • Redding area trails offer family-friendly, paved paths with safe, wheelchair-accessible routes for a sunny winter walk, and visitors can explore Lema Ranch, Clover Creek Preserve, and the Sacramento River Trail near the Sundial Bridge — paths ideal for walking off holiday meals.
