COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Redding veteran was welcomed into his new home yesterday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Waldon Street as the city and Nation's Finest restored a 105-year-old house using a 200,000 dollar grant to provide permanent housing for four veterans. Stephen Hernandez, the regional site director for Nation's Finest, said they are now identifying veterans in need of housing to complete the process.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Turtle Bay Exploration Park is hosting the 6th annual Redding Garden of Lights festival starting today until Jan. 4 on 10 acres near the Sundial Bridge. The festival features more than two million lights — including returning favorites such as Glowing Swings, Model Train Town, and the Enchanted Forest, along with a new Turtle Express Train Ride selling tickets for $10.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The California Community College Board of Governors approved Shasta College’s petition for the Tehama Campus in Red Bluff to become an educational center. The new status will give the campus — now offering 20 certificate programs, 8 associate degrees, and serving over 4,000 students — extra state funding when it reaches 1,000 full-time students by 2029.  A News Cafe

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rain has returned at Serendipity Ranch in Anderson, boosting apple growth on their 13 acre farm while also causing some ripe fruit to fall when the apples split in the rain (fallen fruit is not safe for eating). The ranch is open every day except Tuesdays (visitors may pick fresh, watered fruit and animals receive the dropped apples).  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews marked the cable hanging over Pit River Bridge in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest to address boater safety concerns — the U.S. Forest Service confirmed the cable was not live.  Action News Now
  • Neighbors in Redding raised concerns at a public meeting about the county's plans for a three-part correctional facility off Eastside Road, saying the project could affect safety and groundwater access—county supervisors said the design work is only beginning and will include public listening sessions as part of an Environmental Impact Report.  ShastaScout
  • California Energy Commission Executive Director Drew Bohan recommends that the state deny the Fountain Wind project in eastern Shasta County because its environmental impacts outweigh the benefits—he will present his recommendation at a meeting on December 19 in Sacramento that will be available via Zoom.  Record Searchlight

  • The Redding Rancheria Tribal Health System is hosting the 2nd Annual Northern California Diabetes Conference today at Win-River Resort & Casino. The event will bring together local healthcare professionals, educators, community leaders, and industry experts to share new diabetes care strategies—offering practical tools and culturally informed approaches for Native and rural communities.  Action News Now
  • Good News Rescue Mission will match a state grant with $2.2 million from Shasta County funds to build an $18 million, 24/7 treatment facility for up to 75 people in Shasta County. The project will break ground in March 2026 and aim to rehabilitate 700 homeless locals—offering counseling, skills training, and job readiness programs.  Action News Now
