COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Dignity Health Connected Living Food Bank is stocking up food supplies to meet expected higher demand when CalFresh benefits are delayed next month due to the government shutdown. The food bank is also urging local food pantries to share updates and asking for more volunteers to help avoid being overwhelmed.  ShastaScout
  • The North Valley Community Foundation announced Thursday it launched the Food Insecurity Relief Fund to help food banks tackle regional food shortages. The fund—already raised $100,000—gave its first $20,000 grant to the North State Food Bank to assist smaller pantries in Butte, Glenn, Colusa, Tehama and Plumas counties in restocking supplies.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Redding Fire Department has answered over 15,000 emergency calls this year with Fire Engine Number 5 handling 3,232 calls and stretching its resources on the east side of town—city officials bought land for a new station on Tarmac Road at Shasta View Drive but still lack funds to start construction.  KQMS
  • The Community Foundation of the North State launched the Shasta Critical Response Fund in collaboration with Supervisor Matt Plummer to support local residents affected by the government shutdown that began Oct. 1. They aim to raise $1.7 million by Nov 30 while Plummer donates his county salary and volunteers with food distribution—targeting vital community services.  ShastaScout
  • PG&E will repair a gas main on Dana Drive from November 1 through November 7 with work done nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.—motorists are advised to drive carefully. Traffic control is active at the intersection of Victor Avenue—emergency vehicles will have access during the repairs.  Action News Now
  • Roadwork will close the onramp from Lake Boulevard to Southbound I-5 in North Redding from 4:00 a.m. Saturday until 7:00 a.m. Monday. Drivers will be detoured via Northbound I-5 and Oasis Road — following a round trip back south — as the Lake Boulevard Road Safety Project reconfigures traffic so vehicles enter from a stoplight-controlled intersection — a change designed to improve safety.  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • After Shasta officials opposed the True North Behavioral Health Campus plan, some Tehama County supervisors talked about hosting the project to add 200 new health jobs and improve local care. They expect a presentation from the project team before state funds are approved in spring — the plan will still need zoning and planning clearance.  ShastaScout

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Chris Searcey of Redding has driven around with a giant plastic skeleton in his pickup for two weeks—local students and drivers have enjoyed the sight as he drops his kids off at school and passes by stores. He secures the prop with zip-ties to keep it safe and avoids fast-food drive-through lanes and highways to prevent damage.  Record Searchlight

SPORTS NEWS

  • IRONMAN has announced a new 70.3 triathlon set for August 16 in Shasta County that will take racers through Redding and the scenic Shasta Cascade region. Competitors will follow a course with a (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run) and can earn slots for the World Championship (in Nice) as registration opens November 13.  Action News Now
