COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The YMCA is hosting a free 'Touch a Truck' event this Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on North Court Street, where kids can explore big trucks and safety vehicles from local agencies (including Redding and Anderson police, the sheriff’s office, CHP, and more) while enjoying a food truck, face painting and animal balloons. - ➤ Jim Lewis (a dedicated employee since 2011) became the new CEO of Haven Humane Society after Mark Storrey stepped down, and he plans to meet with local rescue leaders soon to ease tensions over feral cat feeding in Anderson and help boost volunteer efforts for the new disaster response building. The appointment reflects the shelter's ongoing efforts to improve animal rescue in our community. KRCR
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Redding flight nurse Susan Suzie Smith was injured in a helicopter crash on Oct. 6 in Sacramento and died on Oct. 10 + community members held a procession Sunday while a memorial foundation was set up to honor her legacy. Record Searchlight
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Shasta County District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett warned that scams targeting Medicare beneficiaries will likely increase during open enrollment from October 15 to December 7—scammers may contact people via phone, text, or email—and residents are advised to verify any requests by contacting Medicare directly. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Sunday, Oct 12, a festival at the Sundial Bridge marked Hispanic Heritage and Dia de La Raza as local dancers and teen girls in bright dresses performed traditional dances and cleansing ceremonies using copal smoke. The event ended with the bridge lit red + white + green to show unity among Spanish-speaking countries. Record Searchlight

- ➤ Assistant Coach Cary Williams died on October 4th after a short fight with pancreatic cancer—leaving Enterprise High School without one of its most supportive mentors. Head Coach Abie Ramirez and his team will honor his legacy at the season's first game in November against Corning. KRCR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Friends of the Redding Eagles said that Guardian arrived at the nest around 7:22 a.m. Monday and Liberty followed at about 7:45 a.m. to begin the 2025-2026 nesting season—residents can watch the birds live on the FORE stream. Action News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, crews began repairs to the stormwater conveyance system and embankment damaged in the winter storms of 2023—Lime Saddle Road south of Yankee Hill is closed Monday through Friday from sunrise to 12PM and from 12:30 PM to sunset. Action News Now
- ➤ The Redding Planning Commission meets today at 4:00 p.m. to review a plan for the California Heritage Youthbuild Academy to build a new charter high school in East Redding. The new site on Industrial Street near the Center of Hope apartments and the post office will have a 37000 square foot building for classes, offices, a dining area and a gym — it will also include outdoor sports areas and a planned bridge over little Churn Creek. - ➤ Redding officials announced that California-Market alley will close for sewer lateral repairs from Oct. 15 to Nov. 7 every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fell Street will have traffic controls for asphalt replacement until Oct. 31 — emergency vehicles can access Fell Street while motorists are urged to follow detours. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Shasta County Public Health will hold its free drive-through flu shot clinic on Saturday, Oct 18 at 351 Hartnell Ave in Redding as part of its annual event; residents aged 6 months and older can get a standard flu shot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. plus pre-registration is available while walk-ups or drive-ups are welcome.
