COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Bike Weekend has returned to the Civic Auditorium and Rodeo Grounds in Redding, supporting the Redding Police Department's K9 Program and benefiting Communities for Police Canines. The event will feature tomorrow's Sundial Throwdown with officers from across the West and end on Sunday with a poker run at the Northern California Veterans Home + food trucks and a swap meet.  Action News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Redding Police responded to community complaints about a burned RV that has sat abandoned at a gas station since it was set on fire on Sept. 25—officials said it will be towed soon to meet legal requirements.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • PG&E said it will raise water flows on a 6.5-mile section of the Pit River near Burney from October 17th to 19th, making the river fast, cold and deep. The flow will reach 850—1250 cfs compared to the usual 300 to 400 cfs, so only skilled paddlers should attempt the rapids as swimming or tubing will be risky.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Shasta District Fairgrounds hosts a spaghetti dinner and raffle event to raise funds for the Anderson Police Department to purchase a new K9 after Ivan’s retirement — $25 tickets are available from the police department and the event begins at 5 p.m. in Fusaro Hall.  KQMS
  • CAL FIRE officials announced that burn permits will resume in Tehama, Glenn, and Shasta counties starting Monday at 8:00 a.m.—residents with valid agriculture and residential permits can burn on permissible days. They stressed that safety rules must be followed—only dry, natural materials may be burned and inspections are required for agriculture burns.  Action News Now
  • A new California law will require public and private K-12 schools to train teachers, coaches and other staff on preventing and reporting sexual abuse starting in January. The law also mandates schools to establish comprehensive policies and set up a searchable database of personnel under investigation—steps aimed at reducing repeat abuse.  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rocky Herron, a former DEA agent, will lead a free talk on drug prevention for families on October 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Shasta County Office of Education’s Professional Development Center — it is his fourth visit after good feedback from past events. Current DEA agent Ryan Sibbald will join him and the event is part of a five-day series for eighth-graders and teachers — registration is needed because space is limited and light snacks will be served.  Action News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Redding area high school football games are underway for Week 7 of the regular season—teams are competing for points—and editors track scores as the games progress.  Record Searchlight
  • On Oct 10, the Week Seven Under the Lights segment featured the Game of the Week between Enterprise and Chico — the broadcast showcased key plays and moments that engaged viewers.  Action News Now
  • Professional tennis returned to Redding this week with the $30,000 Merrill Lynch Women's Open at Sun Oaks Tennis Club—an event that has for decades helped launch local players' careers with support from the Ascension Project. The semi-finals are set to take place today and the finals will happen tomorrow.  KRCR
