COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Redding’s second annual City Fair will be held on Saturday at the Redding Civic Auditorium and is free to attend, featuring indoor games, interactive electrification displays, laser tag, and more. Redding Police will host a Kars & K9s car show in the auditorium parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  KQMS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three crew members from the REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crash on Oct 6 are receiving care in Sacramento—pilot Chad Millward and Flight Paramedic Margaret Davis are in critical yet stable condition while Flight Nurse Susan Smith is critical and unstable, and Shasta Regional Medical Center will host a candlelight vigil today at 7 p.m. to honor them.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dancing with the Shasta Stars, presented by Obsidian IT, will return on Oct. 18 at Cascade Theatre to support One SAFE Place—an emergency shelter for survivors—after local celebrities Dr. Steve Loncosky and Rachelle Brazil, who joined Daybreak on Oct. 8, performed to raise awareness.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shasta College will host the College Quest event on Monday, October 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the college gymnasium where local experts and national representatives will help students learn about higher education options and scholarships.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • CAL FIRE crews conducted a prescribed burn on Wednesday to remove timber litter from McMullen Mountain in eastern Shasta County within the LaTour Demonstration State Forest — the effort lowered fire danger for the area.  Action News Now
  • Retired Environmental Scientist Dave Bogener of Shasta County documents the return of the salmon by capturing early morning images at local venues—his work highlights the seasonal migration and natural beauty of the area.  A News Cafe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Oct. 8, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1264 banning ultra-processed foods from school lunches, making California the first state to remove harmful additives from meals served in public schools. Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel said the law builds on earlier efforts to improve children’s health in schools.  KRCR
  • Redding voters in Shasta County face a special election on Nov. 4 to decide Proposition 50, a redistricting plan, and Measure A—a proposed 1% tax to fund city services; ballots began mailing on Oct. 6 and the voter registration deadline is Oct. 20 with conditional registration available until Election Day. Voters can drop off their ballots at designated polling places and in-person voting is available for those visiting from other counties.  Record Searchlight
  • Shasta County's high mail-in ballot rate faces delays after the Redding sorting facility closed more than a decade ago—mail is directed to Sacramento where postmarks can lag by a day or two, so the California Secretary of State urges voters to send in their ballots early to avoid invalidation.  KQMS
  • The Shasta County Elections Office in Redding removed a wall in its main voting room and built a new observation room with over a dozen televisions — this setup will livestream the November 4 special election. This change ensures more public transparency during the voting process.  Action News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency and Partnership HealthPlan will offer free flu shots at a new drive-thru clinic at 351 Hartnell Avenue in Redding on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—vaccines will be available for anyone six months and older, with pre-registration encouraged and walk-ins welcomed.  Action News Now
  • Dr. Jenae Kilpatrick from Dignity Health Medical Group North State urges women aged 40 and up to get low-radiation mammograms to catch breast cancer early and to follow a healthy lifestyle — she announced that a free Walk with a Doc event on breast cancer awareness will take place on October 11 at Sundial Bridge.  KRCR

  • Two student-athletes were named Shasta Family YMCA Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 29 to Oct. 5, with Michael Manley from Anderson recognized in football and Rylee Villano from U-Prep honored in volleyball. Manley posted strong receiving numbers—while Villano led U-Prep with significant kills and aces—to boost their teams' performances this season.  Record Searchlight
