COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Haven Humane Society and BISSELL Pet Foundation will hold the Fall Empty the Shelters event from October 1 to October 15, offering free adoptions for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies at the Morgan Adoption Center in Anderson and the PetSmart Adoption kiosk in Redding + the goal is to help more pets find homes and ease shelter crowding.  Action News Now
  • The 44th Annual Honeybee Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday and will feature pancake breakfasts, opening ceremonies, music, antique tractor parades, live bee beard demos and a bee costume parade (beginning at 8 AM) with festivities scheduled to end by 5 PM (local timing).  ShastaScout
  • On September 25th, Dutch Bros shops hosted the annual Caffeinate for a Cause — buying a drink helped support Turtle Bay Exploration Park as a one-dollar donation was made with each purchase. Animal ambassadors including birds, reptiles and mammals visited several locations while tips were also accepted.  KQMS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews stopped the Butternut Fire—on Butternut Trail in North Redding—Wednesday afternoon after it burned 4.1 acres and stayed for several hours to mop up the area.  KQMS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Phelps and four community members formed the Plastic Awareness Coalition to teach Shasta County students about plastic pollution with a new website and school programs. The group will show ‘Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics’ on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McLaughlin Auditorium—an effort to spark creative action against the global crisis.  KRCR
  • PG&E said it will raise water flows on the Pit River below Fall River Lake for two weekends in October—October 3 to 5 and October 17 to 19—to allow whitewater recreation and meet license rules with American Whitewater. Officials warned the higher flows create very hard rapids and urged skilled paddlers to use guided trips as tubing is not safe.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Redding League of Women Voters will hold a free meeting at the Riverfront Theater on California Street from 1 PM to 3 PM on Saturday to discuss a 1% sales tax increase — Proposition 50.  Action News Now
  • Lake Boulevard will have intermittent traffic control from Clay Street to North Market Street starting Monday, September 29 due to AT&T maintenance work on underground utilities from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day until October 3—motorists should drive with caution and use alternate routes while emergency vehicles keep access.  Action News Now
  • Redding announced that traffic controls on Market Street will be extended next week due to construction work. The measures will run from September 29 to October 3 daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. — detour signs guide drivers and emergency vehicles can access the area — while a crane sets materials at 1551 Market Street.  Action News Now
  • At the 52nd annual Peace Officer of the Year awards luncheon at the Win-River Casino Event Center, Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick praised local officers and opposed Senate Bill 627 that stops mask use while on duty—she honored service members including Shasta County Sheriff’s Deputy Nate Baker. The Exchange Club of Redding recognized these officers for their sacrifice and dedication during the event.  A News Cafe
  • AT&T will perform underground utility work on southbound Hilltop Drive between East Palisades Avenue and Dana Drive today through October 3 — work scheduled each day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. is expected to slow traffic for several days.  KQMS
  • RABA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in September for two new trolleys that will serve Routes 3, 4, 11, or 14 during public and special events. The move will expand transit options for local riders.  Action News Now

  • Mercy Medical Center in Redding cares for vulnerable infants in its only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where a team helps babies born as early as 32 weeks by providing advanced respiratory support—ensuring personalized, round-the-clock treatment.  KRCR

  • A local developer purchased the old Napa Auto Parts building in downtown Redding+ they revived it into a commercial center set to boost local business.  Record Searchlight
