- ➤ The Shasta County Search and Rescue Jeep Patrol helped evacuate residents from remote cabins on the Green Fire last Friday — the team was on a monthly training mission when they were called to assist. They split into two groups and used their navigation skills — reaching every affected area. KRCR
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Friends, family, and the Shasta County Sheriff's Office are asking the community to locate at risk George Mieger, 52, who was last seen leaving his Millville home on July 13 at 6:30 a.m. near Oak Creek Bridge and Oak Run Road and who requires specific medications (if you have information, please contact the Sheriff's Office). - ➤ Native mother Lynette Craig has fought hard for answers since her son Nick Patterson went missing in January 2020 after partial remains were found and some bones were lost during police delays & poor communication, and she is now taking extra steps to push for a proper investigation. - ➤ Christopher Witcher waived his right to a preliminary hearing as he faces a murder charge for the October 2024 stabbing that killed Donna Ceremony and injured three others in downtown Redding—his next court date is July 29. Record Searchlight
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Simpson University will expand its Northstate Promise initiative to include high school graduates living within 35 miles of the campus starting this coming school year—eligible students with full Pell and Cal Grants will receive a 50% tuition discount. The university is also adding facilities and growing programs like nursing to support its goal of doubling enrollment. KRCR
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews fighting the Butler Fire in the Six Rivers National Forest reported that the blaze has burned 9,191 acres and that evacuations remain in effect in Butler Flats and Nordheimer. A 50-acre fire that started early Wednesday near Orland forced evacuations which were later lifted — extreme heat and gusty winds challenged the response. KQMS

- ➤ The Redding City Council approved a new tobacco retailer license that adds a $1,176.63 fee for retailers selling tobacco (they previously only paid a $265 annual fee), and the fee takes effect in 30 days. KQMS
