CRIME NEWS

  • A 15-year-old boy from Cottonwood was convicted in Tehama County Juvenile Court for a thwarted plot to attack Evergreen School—authorities said homemade explosives intended for use on May 9th were found after an online tip led to a search.  KQMS
  • On June 24, Redding police caught two wanted felons in separate high-speed chases—46-year-old Troy Lyons, who had a narcotics warrant, was found hiding near Churn Creek Road after abandoning his car, and 36-year-old Michael Shankles, who nearly hit children in a residential pursuit, surrendered after his car was disabled.  KRCR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting Saturday, June 28, Turtle Bay Exploration Park will launch the Turtle Express, a 10-minute train ride from the Turtle Bay Museum that crosses the Sundial Bridge and travels through the arboretum trail. The ride will feature a train conductor sharing insights about the Sacramento River, local wildlife and native plants — with tickets costing $5 for members and $6 for non-members to support educational programs.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camp Cinder Shasta is back in Redding as a four-day camp that ends today, giving young women ages 15 to 17 hands-on training in firefighting jobs such as vehicle extrication and water rescue—activities that build leadership and teamwork. Cal Fire runs the camp to help participants explore fire service careers.  KRCR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Shasta County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, June 24th, Chair Kevin Crye proposed replacing board member Allen Long with Supervisor Chris Kelstrom as his alternate for the upcoming RCRC meeting on a proposed medical school. Allen Long moved to table the change and the 3 to 2 vote passed—Kelstrom will represent the county at the meeting on Friday.  KRCR
  • Assemblymember Rhodesia Ransom and Heather Hadwick of Redding co-wrote a bill to start a bee health program that will provide funds to help beekeepers fight mites and other threats. The bill passed the Assembly and will be looked at by the Senate Agriculture Committee in mid-July—an effort to protect bees that are vital to California farms and the economy.  Record Searchlight
  • CAL FIRE announced up to $135 million in grants to boost wildfire safety in communities, with projects aimed at reducing hazards and protecting homes; applications will be accepted until August 6th. A virtual workshop is scheduled for July 1—eligible applicants include state agencies, Native American tribes and local non-profit groups.  Action News Now
