- ➤ A 24-year-old kayaker stranded on Battle Creek near Coleman Fish Hatchery Road in Anderson was rescued on Sunday after a drone and swift water team located her following her signal fire—which firefighters promptly extinguished amid high wildfire risk, and officials warned against using fire for signaling. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ 19-year-old Ethan Andrew Couch pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter for the accidental shooting death of 22-year-old Paul Nelson in East Redding last March—he fired a short-barrel shotgun he thought was unloaded at a house on Ricardo Avenue. KQMS
- ➤ A wanted man named Cy Jonathon Johnson (41) was arrested Saturday night after police responded to a call of a suspicious person at Gateway Shopping Center on Balls Ferry Road and found two guns including a modified short-barreled shotgun in his parked car, leading to his arrest on multiple charges. KQMS
- ➤ Anderson police arrested convicted felon Cy Jonathon Johnson on June 14 at about 10 p.m. after he matched a report of a suspicious person on Balls Ferry Road and was found with loaded guns in his parked car—he had an outstanding warrant for violating weapons laws. KRCR
- ➤ David Thomas Young vanished from his home in Red Bluff in 2019 — officials are asking anyone with information to help solve his case. Action News Now
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Redding Fashion Alliance will open its new Fashion Fabric Boutique later this summer at 1698 Market St near Cascade Theatre to serve local sewers after Joann’s closure. The nonprofit will sell 300 bolts of fabric, offer classes and drop-in sewing space, and rent equipment by the hour—using donations and wholesale agreements—to support local designers. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ CAL FIRE suspended burn permits effective Monday from the Shasta-Trinity Unit, the Tehama-Glenn Unit and the Siskiyou Unit—dry weather is raising fire risks as grasses dry quickly after a wet winter. Residents must clear 100 feet of defensible space around their homes and finish work before 10 a.m. without using metal-bladed tools. KQMS
- ➤ Redding Regional Airport received a $24.4 million FAA grant to upgrade its runway, blast pads, LED lighting, and signage—announced Friday. The airport will close from September 23 through October 20—during which work will be completed. KQMS
- ➤ The California Energy Commission will meet in August or September to decide on the Fountain Wind Project near Redding, a proposal that has drawn public opposition after a six-hour meeting at the Red Lion Hotel in May- over 40 attendees voiced concerns about the plan for 48 wind turbines on 4,500 acres in the Montgomery Creek-Round Mountain area.
