- ➤ The Redding Police Community Work Program removed 30,000 pounds of debris from homeless camps in the past two weeks—bringing the total to nearly 253,000 pounds since the start of the year—and crews from the Shasta County Alternative Custody Program cleaned sites along Highway 273, near the A.C.I.D. - ➤ On May 8, Never Forgotten Games donated $3,000 to Blue Line Outdoors—an organization that supports law enforcement, firefighters, and military personnel through outdoor programs, and the donation will help further their mission. KRCR

- ➤ A 57-year-old man was swept away by swift water on Sunday from the North Fork Trinity River near Coffee Creek and was rescued after his wife called 9-1-1—rescuers secured him by shooting a line to an island where he was stranded and guided an inflatable kayak to return him safely to his family. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Redding police chief Brian Barner said the body-camera footage released on May 8 shows an officer-involved shooting in a Safeway parking lot in March—where officers surrounded David Schaefer, who had felony warrants—and the suspect reversed his vehicle toward an officer before a shot was fired; Schaefer later drove off and crashed, and the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office has since filed felony charges. - ➤ Jeffery Dean Bembry of Lake Shastina confronted a CHP officer on I—5 near Mountain Gate on Tuesday afternoon when he brandished an AR—15—style weapon, which led to a high—speed chase that ended with his capture on Oasis Road in Redding; he was charged with several felonies including assault with a semiautomatic firearm on an officer and fleeing while driving recklessly as his next court dates are set for May 20 and May 22. - ➤ Redding police released body camera footage from three officers showing a March 26 incident at the Safeway—Lowe’s shopping center on East Cypress Avenue in which officers shot David John Schaeffer, 46, of Anderson as he fled arrest on felony charges, crashed his vehicle, received medical aid and was later arrested in Nevada while the Shasta County Multi-Agency Officer-Involved Critical Incident Team continues to investigate the shooting. - ➤ On May 9, College and Career Options hosted Kinder College Day at Simpson University in Redding where nearly 1,000 kindergarteners learned about college and career options from groups such as Cal Fire and the Redding Police Department — a program designed to show students future opportunities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Redding will start the Old Oregon Trail Shoulder Widening Project on May 12 with road closures, detours, and delays up to 20 minutes from Paso Robles Avenue to Bear Mountain Road until July 31; crews will install new storm drains, relocate utilities and widen shoulders+flaggers and a pilot car will guide traffic safely from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. - ➤ The Shasta County Peace Officer Memorial Coalition will hold its final ceremony at the old courthouse on May 15 at noon to honor fallen officers from various law enforcement agencies—a new location for future memorial services will be announced later. Action News Now
