- ➤ LuLu's in Redding is a local diner where country star Merle Haggard often ate pancakes and oysters in his favorite booth. Owner Richard Paulson, who has run the restaurant since 1988, said the legacy lives on with Haggard's son Ben set to perform at a local street dance on May 9 — echoing the area's rich musical history. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Shasta-Trinity National Forest has planned prescribed burns on 89 acres near Weaverville today and tomorrow to reduce wildfire risk—officials report that while some trails remain open, parts of the area may be closed and residents should expect smoke and slow down on the roads. Action News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Redding is moving ahead with its Riverfront Specific Plan that will set rules for future development along the west side of the Sacramento River from Turtle Bay to Cypress Bridge. City Hall will hold an open house on May 5 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. — city staff will answer questions on emerging ideas before the plan is discussed at the city council meeting on May 20. KQMS
- ➤ A nighttime gas line survey on Airport Road in Redding will run from May 1 to May 6 with lane and shoulder closures between Rancho Road and Fig Tree Lane from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. — drivers are advised to plan alternative routes. Action News Now
- ➤ Today the Shasta County Board of Supervisors is interviewing five candidates for the Clerk and Registrar of Voters position in an open session starting at 11 a.m. in the Shasta Lake City Council Chambers—today is also the final day for Tom Toller, who was appointed last year after Cathy Darling-Allen retired due to health concerns. - ➤ Sheriffs from seven counties, including Shasta, Siskiyou, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Sierra, and Tulare, are opposing proposed state rules that require a Depredation Permit to kill coyotes after they damage livestock. The California Fish and Wildlife Commission will consider the changes at a meeting on May 15. KQMS

- ➤ Redding-area softball saw strong action last week as Foothill won four games including a 15-9 league win over Chico, University Prep earned two wins to return to .500, and Shasta won four games to move closer to third in the EAL.
