COMMUNITY NEWS

  • PG&E reported 70 incidents in 2025 of homeowners damaging underground utility lines because they did not call 811—repairs averaged $3,500, and April is National Safe Digging Month. Homeowners are urged to call 811 two business days before their projects.  Action News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Stand by Me crew member recalled that the team stayed at a local hotel when filming the train bridge scene in Burney for the film's 40th anniversary. He explained how a special technique captured the oncoming train during those two filming days.  KRCR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cascade Union Superintendent Jason Provence said a teacher contract proposal was accepted on Apr. 2 and three board members had resigned, prompting the Shasta County Board of Education to appoint Jackie LaBarbera (to restore the quorum) until new members are named.  Action News Now
  • Three Cascade board members resigned on April 2 after Superintendent Jason Provence offered a 3% salary raise and bonus, following the board’s earlier approval of a 5% increase for teachers (the move reflects local concern over contract negotiations). Two elected trustees remain as the district plans to appoint interim members.  Record Searchlight
  • The Shasta County Office of Education seeks residents from Area 1 to apply for a Board vacancy following a resignation, with public interviews on May 6 and applications due by 4 p.m. April 22 at the office (1644 Magnolia Ave.).  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 25-acre solar project along Battle Creek Bottom Road was approved by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors despite pushback from local residents concerned over views, wildlife, and fire risk. Construction is expected to begin by the end of the year as officials say the project is low-impact and will boost grid reliability.  Action News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shasta County DA's Office started its annual Denim Drive — collecting denim clothes for survivors during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and accepting donations at drop-off bins in its office on West Street and at Tractor Supply on Hilltop Drive until April 24.  KQMS
  • Caltrans lowered the speed limit to 55 mph on Highway 44 from just east of Airport Road (divided highway end) to Shingletown on Thursday. Officials cited lower collision rates in reduced speed zones and poor visibility near Silver Bridge Road as reasons for the change.  KQMS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Walmart recalled its Great Value dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets after tests on April 2, 2026 found dangerous lead levels in 29 oz bags. Californians with these products should discard them or return them to the store for safety.  Record Searchlight

  • Two high school athletes were honored as Shasta Family YMCA Athlete of the Week during March 22-28. Ethan Safford from Anderson led his basketball team while Bailyn Hollister from Central Valley delivered a key softball hit on March 26.  Record Searchlight
