CRIME NEWS

  • Joe Tresch picked up his daughter early after a stranger calling Paradise Junior High pretending to be her grandfather tried to excuse her from class; police and the school resource officer are investigating the incident while advising parents to caution children about sharing personal information online.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A staff member at the Project Share after-school program at Redding STEM Academy was fired after a student reported an inappropriate cellphone image, and school officials sent a letter to parents explaining the incident.  KRCR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The United States Forest Service announced that crews will conduct prescribed burns of 425 acres in Shasta-Trinity National Forest from March 2 to March 6. Road signs and temporary closures may be set near the burn sites — drivers should remain cautious if they see smoke.  Action News Now
  • Residents in Northern California can watch a total lunar eclipse on March 3 when the moon turns red as it passes through Earth’s shadow. The eclipse starts at 12:44 a.m. and peaks at 3:33 a.m., with clear skies expected from Redding to Red Bluff.  Record Searchlight

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redding Electric Utility proposed 4.5% electric bill hikes annually for four years and held two forums yesterday to explain rising costs plus infrastructure upgrades; the City Council will vote on the proposal March 3.  ShastaScout
  • The City Council will discuss a proposal Tuesday evening to allow legal-age patrons to carry open alcoholic drinks along Hilltop Drive during the Kool April Cruise as part of Kool April Nites. The measure mirrors rules in the downtown entertainment zone established in December and applies solely for that one event night.  KQMS
  • California’s state attorney general reached a settlement with Redding’s Property Upsurge that requires a payment of $550,000 to affected tenants, $200,000 in debt relief plus $50,000 in civil penalties and mandates new tenant protection policies. The investigation began in 2023 with local code enforcement and Shasta County officials.  ShastaScout
  • Residents in Big Bend + Round Mountain + Montgomery Creek can sign up for the Shasta County Fire Safe Council’s free residential chipping program; enrollment ends March 31 and crews will begin chipping on April 1.  Action News Now
  • Shasta County allocated $250,000 to non-profit Our Heroes' Dreams (currently housing 30 veterans) to help veterans avoid homelessness with temporary housing, rides, and counseling; the reimbursement-based funding will support additional veterans in need.  KRCR

  • Enterprise Hornets basketball player Catherine Ahart was named Action News Now's Scholar Athlete of the Month after she led her team with an average of 19.4 points per game and 542 points this season. Her honor recognizes her strong academic and athletic performance.  Action News Now
  • The Pleasant Valley Jr. Vikings cheer team won first place at the USA Spirit Nationals event last weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, while the Orland team finished second; Christy Dolz confirmed the result on Friday.  Action News Now
  • The Pleasant Valley Jr. Vikings clinched first place nationally in a youth cheerleading competition on Friday, Feb. 27 & the Orland cheer team took second.  Action News Now
