COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Haven Humane Society in Anderson reported record adoptions in 2025 when it placed 2,134 animals into new homes. The shelter helped nearly 10,000 animals while volunteers contributed 12,778 hours of care including spay-neuter services and a kitten nursery to keep pets with their families. Record Searchlight
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Mike Freeman, the Shasta County Schools Superintendent, announced he will run to continue in his role on June 2, after serving as an educator for 25 years (appointed in 2024 after Judy Flores retired). KQMS
- ➤ Simpson University reported enrollment topping 1,000 as construction begins on a $7.5 million business, technology, and engineering building set to open by fall semester. The school also sees growth in athletics and nursing programs, supported by local initiatives (such as the Northstate Promise). KRCR
- ➤ College of the Siskiyous announced its new associate degree in communication studies (social media focus) today. The program will start in spring 2026 with two online Zoom courses for podcasting and live streaming. Record Searchlight
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Redding City Council approved $116,000 monthly funding for the Civic Auditorium for four months starting March 1 to keep it open amid budget challenges — they will review the possibility of additional funds in May if Advance Redding meets long-term sustainability goals. - ➤ SNAP changes take effect June 1 in Shasta County under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act—requiring adults 18 to 65 to work or volunteer and ending exemptions for veterans, the homeless, and foster youth—and those with children under 14, over 64, or with disabilities remain exempt, affecting 4,500 people. - ➤ Caltrans crews paused work along I-5 in Redding when hazardous human waste forced them to call in a specialized contractor & delay repairs. The delay costs taxpayers $9,000 every 90 days and could stall work for weeks. KRCR

- ➤ California health officials say the Nipah virus risk is low for locals, even though India confirmed two cases on Feb. 4; the CDC + CDPH recommend standard travel precautions as they monitor global updates. Record Searchlight
- ➤ Northstate grief counselor Suzanne Tovey works with the city to hold a workshop for kids to honor lost loved ones. The event is on Valentine’s Day at the Caldwell Park Teen Center (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) for children ages 6-12. KRCR
