- ➤ Haven Humane's Community Pet Food Pantry in Anderson is facing a critical shortage of cat food and needs donations of dry cat food—both unopened and opened—from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the Haven Humane Receiving Building. KRCR

- ➤ Northstate community members welcomed Mattel’s first autistic Barbie doll, which debuted yesterday at Sensory Innovations on Hilltop Drive. - ➤ Local experts advise job seekers on boosting skills through training programs to qualify for healthcare roles and other in-demand jobs. The Institute of Technology begins a seven-week nursing assistant class on Jan. 26 — SMART Workforce Center also offers free resume reviews. Record Searchlight

- ➤ First 5 Shasta is offering Good Neighbor Grants of $500 to $1,500 to support early childhood and community projects — applications are accepted on First 5 Shasta’s website until Apr. 30; guidelines detail project eligibility. Record Searchlight
- ➤ Shasta Family YMCA will launch its Montessori preschool in February at 1740 Eureka Way, offering classes from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children ages 2.5 to 5 +with small groups and certified staff+ to foster early learning. Record Searchlight
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Heavy holiday rains brought Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County to full capacity last week — water spilled into its glory hole to protect the dam. The reservoir peaked at 1,210.5 feet and helped make California drought-free for the first time since December 2000. Action News Now
- ➤ National park staff at Whiskeytown are upgrading facilities for extra guest access, including reopening the visitor center and group sites in 2026. Shasta Trinity is repairing a suspension bridge closed until Oct. 31 + crews remain on duty to fix storm damage. Record Searchlight

- ➤ Wildfire survivors are working with state legislators to draft a bill that will properly compensate wildfire victims, according to an Action News Now report from the studio. The group is in discussions to secure fair compensation for those affected by recent fires. Action News Now
- ➤ The memorial for late Congressman LaMalfa will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico, with parking opening at 9:30 a.m. and doors at 10 a.m.; tickets are required and guests should arrive early (for security screenings). Record Searchlight
