COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross will host a Multi-Agency Resource Center from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4 at Northern Valley Catholic Social Services - 2400 Washington Ave to offer information and support for storm-affected residents. Health and mental health volunteers will be on duty during operating hours.  KRCR
  • The Red Cross will host a Multi-Agency Resource Center for homeowners affected by storm damage from Jan. 2 to Jan. 4 at 2400 Washington Ave in Redding (operating 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The center will provide home evaluations and support from volunteer teams and partner agencies.  KRCR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, PG&E will reduce electric bills by 5%, saving customers about $7 per month. This is the fourth rate cut in two years.  Action News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Whitmore and Mountain Union school districts plan to merge into one district effective July 1, 2027 to coordinate educational programs in eastern Shasta County. The existing boards will manage the district until a new five-member board is elected in November.  Record Searchlight

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • This January, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will use helicopters in Northern California counties (Lassen, Modoc, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama) to capture Deer, Elk and Gray Wolves, fit them with GPS collars, and transmit daily data for three years so scientists and ranchers can monitor movements and reduce conflicts.  KQMS
  • The City of Redding reported that a storm on Dec. 21 brought intense rains that caused localized flooding and led to 60 water rescues. Crews worked round the clock to clear debris from clogged drains and officials say further heavy floods will occur only if a storm of similar strength hits again.  A News Cafe

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shasta County officials are gathering flood damage reports from residents and businesses after December storms and ask those in unincorporated areas to email details by Jan. 8. Redding residents should use the city’s online form to report any flooding damage (include contact info and photos) for assessment.  Action News Now
  • Redding responded to a 50-year storm with 60 rescues in four hours, and a Red Cross resource center will open Friday to help residents report damage and access recovery aid.  Action News Now
  • Sheriff Kory L. Honea shared safety tips for New Year's Eve (Dec. 31) that urged residents to use safe travel routes and secure local venues during celebrations. His advice aimed to protect community well-being as festivities ended.  Action News Now
  • City officials are reviewing the response to the December 21 flood from a 50-year rain event and assessing crew readiness. The Red Cross and nonprofits will set up a multi-agency resource center on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Northern Valley Catholic Social Services to offer relief and counseling.  KQMS
  • Shasta County extended the window for CalFresh replacement benefits until Jan. 20 for households that lost food due to winter storms, power outages, flooding or other disasters. Applicants can visit regional offices, call the customer service center, or apply online at BenefitsCal.com (regional offices are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday).  Action News Now
